Furnishing your home with greenery is indeed wise and can spice up your space with their pretty leaves, green colors and special shapes. In our previous articles, we’ve talked something about large houseplants decor and care like Bird of Paradise and Fiddle Leaf Fig. These two plants have dominated the market of popular in-house tree-like plants. Today we’re going to have a look at another popular tree plant: Rubber tree plant.

Basic info and its characteristics

With its large, deep green leaves, the rubber tree plant, formally called ficus elastica, is native to India and Malaysia. Its oval leaves are glossy and shiny and feel like rubber. And it looks like the leave is applied with oil. Interestingly, its milky sap has been used to make rubber. This plant can be grown indoor or outdoor and not that tricky to take care of. It can grow up to 50 feet (15 m.) tall within a few years and can grow upwards of 24 inches in a season. But if you want to restrict their growth, just keep them in smaller planters, they won’t grow as big. When the plant reach the desire height, you’d better cut the top so that it can branch out. Keep a young rubber tree plant is better than choosing a more mature plant, for a young one can adapt to being an indoor plant better.

PS: It has slight toxicity. Pets may enjoy nibble on these plants, so beware of this if you have pets. Best practice is always to keep houseplants out of reach of small children and pets. Don’t let it rest on your skin.

How to maintain

When it comes to rubber plant care, as is often the case, proper light and water must be considered. Rubber tree plant loves a lot of indirect light. Putting it beside a sunny window with sheer curtains seems ideal for it to grow. Because it offers the plant enough light with less heat. If your rubber plant becomes leggy, its leaves lose their luster, or its lower leaves fall off, it’s telling you that it needs more sunlight.

For its watering frequency, it changes with different seasons. Summer is the growing season, in which the plant should be kept moist by wiping the leaves with a damp cloth or even misting them. It should be watered at least once a week. During the dormant season, your may only need water once or twice a month. If the leaves become droopy, it may indicate a need for more water. While when the leaves turn yellow or brown, and drop, it might be a signal of over-watering.

Choose proper flowerpots

A flowerpot with a drainage hole at the bottom is important, for it allows water to drain freely and keeps plants healthy. Leizisure self-watering flowerpot helps you better grow your plant.
